Expert-reviewed information summary about the treatment of melanoma.

Clinical Trials to Treat Melanoma
Check for melanoma treatment trials from NCI's PDQ® Cancer Clinical Trials Registry now accepting patients. The list of clinical trials can be refined by location, stage of disease, drug, and other features.

Response to Immunotherapy for Melanoma Tied to Autoimmunity
Patients treated for melanoma skin cancer with adjuvant interferon alfa-2b who developed clinical signs of autoimmunity were significantly more likely than those who did not to respond to the treatment, according to a report in the Feb. 16, 2006, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers Shut Off Immune Cell Inhibition, Causing Tumor Shrinkage and Autoimmunity in Patients With Metastatic Melanoma
An antibody that blocks the activity of a key immunoregulatory molecule caused tumor shrinkage in patients with metastatic melanoma when administered along with a cancer vaccine, according to a report published online June 24, 2003, by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Angiogenesis Inhibitors Therapy
A fact sheet that describes the process of eliminating the blood supply to tumors. Lists the cancers in which this approach is being tested.

Biological Therapies for Cancer: Questions and Answers
A fact sheet that provides an overview of how the immune system functions and describes the actions of biological therapies.

Metastatic Cancer: Questions and Answers
A fact sheet about metastasis, the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Discusses the diagnosis and treatment of cancer that has spread.

Targeted Cancer Therapies
This NCI fact sheet describes targeted cancer therapies, which are drugs that block the growth and spread of cancer by interfering with specific molecules involved in carcinogenesis (the process by which normal cells are transformed into cancer cells) and tumor growth.
